Our Impact

Every day at Safari West is shaped by the animals in our care.

Through Research, Education, and Conservation, we learn from them, care for them with intention, and create moments that help people see—and protect—wildlife in a deeper way.

The Heart of Our Mission

Safari West’s impact is driven by integrated Research, Education, and Conservation (REC) programs that advance wildlife understanding, expand scientific knowledge, and foster public understanding of conservation challenges.

Through these interconnected pillars, Safari West supports ethical animal care, evidence-based conservation practices, and educational experiences that inspire informed stewardship of wildlife and habitats.

Research

Safari West studies animal behavior and health to improve wildlife care. We also collaborate with other zoological institutions and universities. Our preserve serves as a living classroom and research center—supporting projects including population management, animal welfare, and species survival. Through this work, we contribute to the global understanding of wildlife conservation and the ethical care of species under human stewardship.

Education

Education is a vital part of Safari West’s mission and is woven into the guest experience. Through daily safari tours, keeper interactions, and behind-the-scenes experiences, guests gain insight into wildlife behavior, conservation science, and the realities of caring for animals in human care.

Safari West’s educational approach is grounded in real-world experience—connecting people to the natural world through observation, dialogue, and respect for wildlife. These experiences are designed to deepen understanding, spark curiosity, and foster a lasting appreciation for conservation at every stage of life.

Conservation

At Safari West, conservation happens daily—from our managed breeding programs for endangered species to our support of wildlife initiatives around the world. We partner with organizations that protect habitats, fund anti-poaching efforts, and promote biodiversity. Closer to home, we focus on sustainable practices, animal enrichment, and community engagement to ensure the Sonoma Serengeti remains a model for coexistence between humans and wildlife.
